I can’t remember a time that God and the church was not a part of my life. I would be considered a “cradle Lutheran”. My father was a Lutheran pastor for over 35 years. I grew up in Iowa, living in parsonages, and the church being a major part of our life together as a family. I remember as a young child, playing in my dad’s office, and going on communion calls and hospital visits with him. I attended Wartburg College, in Waverly Iowa, majoring in political science and psychology. In 1998, I graduated from Luther Seminary in St. Paul, MN. I served churches in Waverly, IA and Frederika, IA and then accepted a call as associate pastor to Cross of Christ in 2006. I was then called as Lead Pastor in 2018. Colorado has been a wonderful place to raise our family and the congregation has been a blessing to us. I love working the families of the church and to be able to share God’s word with even the littlest of our members. I oversee Stewardship, Long Range Planning, and Finance. I also oversee and work closely with the staff on Faith Formation and Worship. I am married to Tim, who is a Middle School ELL teacher. We have two boys, Brune who is 16 years old and Kaden who is 14 years old. They keep me busy outside of church with football, wrestling, track, and musical concerts. I am also very fortunate to have my parents so close by living in Allenspark, and yet they travel down the mountain to worship with our children.
Pastor Phil was born in Billings, MT and was baptized on May 20, 1956 at First English Lutheran Church. He was raised in Montana until his family moved to San Antonio, TX where he resided until graduating high school. Pastor Phil returned to Montana to complete his undergraduate education in Business Management. He then began a 20 year career with ARCO (an oil and gas company) that required him to relocate to Atlanta GA, Los Angeles CA, Anchorage AK, Dallas TX and back to Alaska in 1990 where he remained for the better part of 14 years. He is the proud father of a daughter, Kaley, who is a graduate of Pacific Lutheran University (Psychology), the University of Denver (Counseling and Social Work), married to Jake (Aero Space Engineer), and is currently residing in Denver, CO as a mental health counselor.
Pastor Phil’s call to ministry came later in his life. After leaving ARCO during a corporate merger, he took a sabbatical to be a full time father and determine what God had planned for him. His journey of discovery would eventually take him to Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary as a resident MDIV student. He remained in Berkeley CA for over a year until family needs took Pastor Phil back to Alaska. In order to continue his call to pastoral ministry, he transferred into TEEM (Theological Education for Emerging Ministries). Pastor Phil completed his academic work in TEEM and was ordained on March 28, 2010. It is during a TEEM gathering that Pastor Phil met Pastor Janet Colby from Canby, MN. Trusting in God along the way, Phil and Janet continued to develop the love they shared over several years and were married on February 8, 2014.
Pastor Phil previously served Trinity Lutheran Church in Palmer, AK (2006-2007), Epiphany Lutheran Church in Valdez, AK (2007-2014), Providence Valley Lutheran Church (Interim pastor 2014-2015), and St Paul Lutheran church in Albuquerque, NM (Interim pastor) 2016-2017). Pastors Phil and Janet have 7 children (including 2 son-in-laws and 1 daughter-in-law) and three grandchildren that bring great joy to life. Pastor Phil enjoys cooking with Janet and developing a new ministry called Kitchen Theology. If time is available, the “Phil” in “Pastor Phil” enjoys fly fishing, golf, and billiards.
Music has always been the catalyst of my faith journey, and fuel for my soul. Music has been where I have most often encountered God; through its mysterious power to tease emotions I did not know I could have, or in molding words of faith into divinely crafted structures of the heart. God has granted me the gift of using music to know Him.In the midst of my studies as a music composition major at the University of Colorado, I had a chance opportunity to work as a music intern at Montview Boulevard Presbyterian Church. After working with my childhood teacher, and lifelong mentor, John Kuzma, I discovered my calling to ministry. In many of my experiences as an intern, I saw deeper into the power and importance music has in our worship and faith. My own faith strengthened through the transformative events in my life that centered around the church. I feel blessed to know my calling and joyfully serve my own part in the Great Commission.Today, I enjoy leading many of the music ensembles at Cross of Christ and overseeing the entire music ministry. I also enjoy arranging and composing music for various ensembles in the Denver Metropolitan area and around the country. My wife, Rachel, and I have been happy to have made Cross of Christ our home since we joined in 2010.
Growing up in Colorado I have always loved the outdoors. Finding peace at the top of a Mountain looking out into God’s Creation will always be one of my favorite adventures to go on. Wanting to adventure out into the rest of the world I attended Augsburg College in Minneapolis, MN. Where I majored in Communications, and Business Management and minored in Religion. I also was a part of the Cross Country and Track Teams at Augsburg.
Spending my summers in college as a camp counselor. I felt the call into youth ministry around a campfire and under the stars. The adventure, the community, the peacefulness in the chaos, I witnessed God’s adventurous spirit as we played, prayed, and learned about who our God is.
I am so excited to be serving Cross of Christ as your Director of Youth Ministry. I hope to bring adventure, community, and playfulness into the lives of the youth and families.

I love serving as the Director of Children’s Ministries at Cross of Christ because I absolutely love kids! My hope is that all kids know and experience the love, joy and peace of God in their lives. I have taught children of all ages for many years but most of my experience has been teaching kids at the preschool and kindergarten levels. My husband Nick and I are transplants from North Dakota and have eight children. Three sons were born to us and then we adopted two daughters from Colombia and a son from India. These kids are adults and live in various cities around the United States. Our “caboose kids” are in high school and include a son adopted from the U.S and a daughter from Liberia. In addition, we have the great joy of having five grandchildren who live in Colorado! My spare time is spent enjoying family and this beautiful state!
I am a life-long Lutheran, born and raised in Kansas, baptized at my grandmother’s Swedish Lutheran Church in Lindsborg, Kansas and confirmed at Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church in Wamego, Kansas. My husband, Bart and I were married in 1969 in my mom’s home church (a thoroughly German community), St. John’s Lutheran, in the tiny farming community of Tampa, Kansas.
High school sweethearts, Bart and I spent our first year of marriage as he completed his service in the U.S. Navy (stationed on the aircraft carrier, Kitty Hawk). The first few months we were in Bremerton, WA while the ship was in dry dock (it is quite a sight to see that enormous ship pulled completely out of the water and then repaired and painted before sending it back out to sea) and then the servicemen and their families rode the carrier down to San Diego, CA for sea trials.
We spent the next 19 years in Bartlesville, OK, before moving first to Fort Collins, Co and then to the Thornton, CO area and now we live in Berthoud, CO. We are so blessed to have our two daughters, their husbands and our four grandchildren live within a few miles of our home. I’ve worked, at least part-time, most of my adult life and always in an office. After moving to the Thornton area, I worked at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Thornton for a few years, before coming to Cross of Christ in 2001. Here at Cross of Christ I have my dream job and most important I have found my faith family.
I was born in Alabama and moved to Colorado when I was 2 ½. Because I don’t remember anything before I moved to Colorado, I consider myself a native. I am a lifelong Lutheran, raised in Colorado Springs where my family attended First Lutheran Church and my brothers and I attended Immanuel Lutheran School.
I earned my BA as well as met my husband, Jon, at The University of Wyoming (Go Pokes!). Jon and I married not long after college graduation and moved to Westminster where we lived for a number of years before moving to Thornton. We have a 17-year-old daughter and a 15-year-old son. I was lucky enough to be a stay at home mom with them for 15 years.
We found Cross of Christ when I was pregnant with our daughter in 1999. My husband and I had visited several churches before Cross of Christ but after our first visit here, we knew that we had found the right church for us.
My faith has grown tremendously in the 18 years that we have been members here, especially in the last six. I would say that the growth of my faith is directly related to my involvement in the ministries here at Cross of Christ. Being involved has helped me develop relationships with many wonderful people, provided me with opportunities to learn and make decisions about what it means to me to be a follower of Christ, and given me the chance to share His love with others.
I took over the Congregational Life Coordinator position in April 2015 and really enjoy working with the staff and congregation of Cross of Christ. Most people have to keep quiet about their faith at work and I am so thankful that I get to work in a place that allows me to share it!
I was born and raised in the Twin Cities (MN) area where I attended Christ Lutheran Church with my family. I earned my BA in Business Administration/Accounting at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, MN before moving to Colorado in 1997. I spent many years working as an auditor at a public accounting firm in Denver and eventually in administration at a local Denver restaurant company. I was also a stay at home mom for 10 years. My husband, Jason, and I moved to Broomfield in 2007 and found Cross of Christ shortly thereafter. We were looking for a welcoming faith community with strong children’s programs to get involved in with our three kids. Between the preschool, Sunday School and youth programs, we feel we have hit the jackpot here! I took over as the Financial Secretary of the church in February 2016. This position has been such as blessing to me and I have really enjoyed working with such a wonderful group of people.
I was born in New York and lived on Long Island until I was 9, when my family moved to Colorado. I’ve had a passion for working with children for as long as I can remember, from working in my church nursery and VBS to being immersed in the field of early childhood education for the last 18 years. I have had the privilege of working with young children from birth through age 6, and what I love most is watching children learn, grow, and change as they develop trusting relationships with their caregivers.
I have a Bachelor’s degree in Human Development and Family Studies and a Master’s degree in Early Childhood Education. I found Cross of Christ Preschool and Kindergarten in the spring of 2009. It has been a blessing and a joy to work as the Assistant Director for the last eight years, and I am looking forward to leading a team of amazing early childhood professionals as I step into my new role as the Preschool Director.
My husband Jay is a high school music teacher in the Adams 12 school district and we have two daughters, who are 7 and 9 years old. As I continue my lifelong journey of growing in my faith, family, and career, I am constantly reminded that I am blessed beyond measure.
