Pastors and Staff
Pastor Debra Engquist is pleased to serve Cross of Christ as Bridge Pastor under call from the Rocky Mountain Synod Council. Pastor Deb recently completed a call as Interim Lead Pastor at Bethany Lutheran Church in Cherry Hills Village, CO. Prior to that she served as Lead Pastor at Atonement Lutheran, Boulder, CO (2001-2014) and Associate Pastor at Holy Shepherd, Lakewood, CO (1995-2001). Pastor Deb graduated from Luther Seminary in St. Paul, MN, in 1995. She and her husband, Mike Rex, have been married 45 years. They have three sons, two of whom live in Arvada with their families, and one in Redlands, CA. Currently they spend as much time as they can camping, hiking, and hanging out with their two grandchildren, Hazel and Charlie, and their German Shepherd, Radar.
I can’t remember a time that God and the church was not a part of my life.  I would be considered a “cradle Lutheran”. My father was a Lutheran pastor for over 35 years. I grew up in Iowa, living in parsonages, and the church being a major part of our life together as a family. I remember as a young child, playing in my dad’s office, and going on communion calls and hospital visits with him.  I attended Wartburg College, in Waverly Iowa, majoring in political science and psychology. In 1998, I graduated from Luther Seminary in St. Paul, MN. I served churches in Waverly, IA and Frederika, IA and then accepted a call to Cross of Christ in 2006. Colorado has been a wonderful place to raise our family and the congregation has been a blessing to us. I oversee Faith Formation and Evangelism. I love working the families of the church and to be able to share God’s word with even the littlest of our members.I am married to Tim, who is a high school Spanish teacher. We have two boys, Brune who is 15 years old and Kaden who is 12 years old. I am also very fortunate to have my parents so close by living in Allenspark, and yet they travel down the mountain to worship with our children.
Music has always been the catalyst of my faith journey, and fuel for my soul. Music has been where I have most often encountered God; through its mysterious power to tease emotions I did not know I could have, or in molding words of faith into divinely crafted structures of the heart. God has granted me the gift of using music to know Him.In the midst of my studies as a music composition major at the University of Colorado, I had a chance opportunity to work as a music intern at Montview Boulevard Presbyterian Church. After working with my childhood teacher, and lifelong mentor, John Kuzma, I discovered my calling to ministry. In many of my experiences as an intern, I saw deeper into the power and importance music has in our worship and faith. My own faith strengthened through the transformative events in my life that centered around the church. I feel blessed to know my calling and joyfully serve my own part in the Great Commission.Today, I enjoy leading many of the music ensembles at Cross of Christ and overseeing the entire music ministry. I also enjoy arranging and composing music for various ensembles in the Denver Metropolitan area and around the country. My wife, Rachel, and I have been happy to have made Cross of Christ our home since we joined in 2010.
I love serving as the Director of Children’s Ministries at Cross of Christ because I absolutely love kids! My hope is that all kids know and experience the love, joy and peace of God in their lives. I have taught children of all ages for many years but most of my experience has been teaching kids at the preschool and kindergarten levels. My husband Nick and I are transplants from North Dakota and have eight children. Three sons were born to us and then we adopted two daughters from Colombia and a son from India. These kids are adults and live in various cities around the United States. Our “caboose kids” are in high school and include a son adopted from the U.S and a daughter from Liberia. In addition, we have the great joy of having five grandchildren who live in Colorado! My spare time is spent enjoying family and this beautiful state!

I am a life-long Lutheran, born and raised in Kansas, baptized at my grandmother’s Swedish Lutheran Church in Lindsborg, Kansas and confirmed at Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church in Wamego, Kansas.  My husband, Bart and I were married in 1969 in my mom’s home church (a thoroughly German community), St. John’s Lutheran, in the tiny farming community of Tampa, Kansas.

High school sweethearts, Bart and I spent our first year of marriage as he completed his service in the U.S. Navy (stationed on the aircraft carrier, Kitty Hawk).  The first few months we were in Bremerton, WA while the ship was in dry dock (it is quite a sight to see that enormous ship pulled completely out of the water and then repaired and painted before sending it back out to sea) and then the service men and their families rode the carrier down to San Diego, CA for sea trials.

We spent the next 19 years in Bartlesville, OK, before moving first to Fort Collins, Co and then to the Thornton, CO area and now we live in Berthoud, CO.  We are so blessed to have our two daughters, their husbands and our four grandchildren live within a few miles of our home.  I’ve worked, at least part-time, most of my adult life and always in an office.  After moving to the Thornton area, I worked at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Thornton for a few years, before coming to Cross of Christ in 2001.  Here at Cross of Christ I have my dream job and most important I have found my faith family.
I was born in Alabama and moved to Colorado when I was 2 ½.  Because I don’t remember anything before I moved to Colorado, I consider myself a native.  I am a lifelong Lutheran, raised in Colorado Springs where my family attended First Lutheran Church and my brothers and I attended Immanuel Lutheran School.

I earned my BA as well as met my husband, Jon, at The University of Wyoming (Go Pokes!).  Jon and I married not long after college graduation and moved to Westminster where we lived for a number of years before moving to Thornton.  We have a 16-year-old daughter and a 14-year-old son. I was lucky enough to be a stay at home mom with them for 15 years.

We found Cross of Christ when I was pregnant with our daughter in 1999.  My husband and I had visited several churches before Cross of Christ but after our first visit here, we knew that we had found the right church for us.

My faith has grown tremendously in the 18 years that we have been members here, especially in the last six.  I would say that the growth of my faith is directly related to my involvement in the ministries here at Cross of Christ.  Being involved has helped me develop relationships with many wonderful people, provided me with opportunities to learn and make decisions about what it means to me to be a follower or Christ, and given me the chance to share His love with others.

I took over the Congregational Life Coordinator position in April 2015 and really enjoy working with the staff and congregation of Cross of Christ.  Most people have to keep quiet about their faith at work and I am so thankful that I get to work in a place that allows me to share it!

I was born and raised in the Twin Cities (MN) area where I attended Christ Lutheran Church with my family.  I earned my BA in Business Administration/Accounting at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, MN before moving to Colorado in 1997.  I spent many years working as an auditor at a public accounting firm in Denver and eventually in administration at a local Denver restaurant company.  I was also a stay at home mom for 10 years.  My husband, Jason, and I moved to Broomfield in 2007 and found Cross of Christ shortly thereafter.  We were looking for a welcoming faith community with strong children’s programs to get involved in with our three kids.  Between the preschool, Sunday School and youth programs, we feel we have hit the jackpot here!  I took over as the Financial Secretary of the church in February 2016.  This position has been such as blessing to me and I have really enjoyed working with such a wonderful group of people.

TanyaThisOneI grew up going to church every Sunday. My mom passed on the value of being involved in the church as her father was a Lutheran pastor and her mother played the organ for their church. Growing up, my family and I were very involved in many aspects of church, from singing in the choir to youth group and acolyting to playing bells in the bell choir. My mom was the director of the bell choir and everyone else in the family played.I attended Wittenberg University in Springfield, OH and obtained a minor in music, studying organ under Dr. Donald Busarow. You can find many pieces written by him in the Lutheran Book of Worship. I continued with my involvement in church, and grew in faith, as I helped out in the worship services at Wittenberg, from playing guitar, singing in the choir and helping to plan the contemporary services.I started the chime choir at Cross of Christ Lutheran Church when my oldest son was just a baby, 8 years ago. Now we have a three octave set of bells, and both he and my husband are playing in the bell choir. My oldest daughter is interested in joining as well, so before long the bell choir will probably be a family affair!
I grew up in New Rockford, North Dakota. I believe that my faith in God began while I stood at my grandmother’s bedside singing hymns with our pastor. He invited me to sing “Beneath the Cross of Jesus” with him. I thank God for guiding me through the years to get to know so many people of faith. When I was 16, my family moved to Minot, North Dakota where I completed high school and graduated from college with a degree in Elementary Education. Anxious to be on my own, I moved to Colorado where I taught kindergarten through third grade in Adams County School District # 12 grades for 28 years. While teaching, I completed my Master’s Degree in Early Childhood at the University of Colorado at Denver. My husband, Bob was born in Alamosa, Colorado. He also taught at the elementary level in Adams County School District # 12. He now devotes much of his time to his art. He does representational paintings of Native Americans and also abstract pieces. We have been married for nearly forty-five years and are blessed with three children and seven grandchildren. It’s been very special to have such a large family who all live in the Denver area.In 2003 I was approached to direct the preschool at Cross of Christ. At the time I was very involved with helping refugee families through Lutheran Family Services. I also helped with the sandwich program for the homeless in Denver and at Cross of Christ. When asked about becoming the preschool director, I remember thinking “I don’t have any experience being a director so I wouldn’t know how to do it. “ After several weeks I realized that perhaps God had plans for me. I was afraid and unsure but agreed to direct the school for the last eight weeks of school. I somehow made it through and then made the decision to continue serving as director for the coming year. Verse 13 of Philippians Chapter 4 reads “I can do all things through Christ which strengthens me.” He truly did that for me then and continues to do so today. It’s hard to believe that I have been here now for nine years. Where did the time go! I must say I love working with the children, their families, the school staff and the church staff. Each day brings its own challenges but also its blessings! Just seeing children discover something new or create something is such a joy! Watching them grow and learn gives me great energy. My passion is for Cross of Christ Preschool and Kindergarten to be the best school that it can be. One of my goals for the staff is to foster in our students a love for learning. I want to be sure that the teachers provide opportunities to the children daily that will enable them to grow in all areas of their development. It’s so important that our children know how much God loves them and how He cares for them. I am so grateful to the church staff and the school staff for helping our children grows and learn.God has indeed blessed me with the privilege and responsibility of working as the preschool and kindergarten director at Cross of Christ.
