Lector or Scripture Reader Volunteer Description

Thank you so much for volunteering at Cross of Christ!  We could not be a successful, influential, loving congregation without your commitment and involvement.

As a Lector (8 am or 9 am service) or Scripture Reader (11:15 am service) you are reading the Scriptures, prayers, and psalms during worship service at Cross of Christ Lutheran Church to the congregation.  The Scripture readings will be mailed to you the week before your Sunday. Please read them over (maybe even practice them out loud) and check for pronunciation difficulties.  If you have any questions, please talk to one of the pastors during the week or on Sunday before the service.

Please read through the following responsibilities:

  • Please come early to worship and check the Bible ahead of time to make sure it is open to the 1st Lesson.  The readings should be marked in the Bible with post-it note arrows which make it easy to follow
  • After the Prayer of the Day, please come forward to the pulpit.
  • 1st Lesson
    • Read the scripture from the pulpit Bible.
    • Begin the reading saying: “A reading from the book of (insert the book’s name, i.e. Genesis), chapter (insert chapter number, i.e. 3).”  It isn’t necessary to announce the verses.
  • The Psalm
    • The Psalm is sometimes sung by the congregation and cantor, and sometimes read responsively with you. Please check the bulletin for the morning as the church office doesn’t always know in time to send that information with your readings.
    • If the Psalm is being sung, you can sit by the pastors during that time.
    • If the Psalm is read responsively
      • You can ask the congregation to divide it between men and women, or sides of the sanctuary, or with you reading the bold and them reading the light print. Just announce what you would like them to do. It is easiest if you start the psalm (i.e. if you are male, have the men start, or have the pulpit side read first with you)
  • If there is a 2nd Lesson
    • You should easily find the 2nd Lesson by holding the 2nd red ribbon marker and turning to that part of the New Testament.
    • Read the scripture from the pulpit Bible.
    • Begin the reading saying: “A reading from the book of (insert the book’s name, i.e. Genesis), chapter (insert chapter number, i.e. 3).”  It isn’t necessary to announce the verses.
  • We are now emailing the lessons to you the week of your volunteering commitment.  Please let us know if you would prefer the lessons be mailed to you instead.

Thanks for your ministry!
